Marronage and Maroon Communities: A Common Atlantic History?

On the 1^st of April the Atlantic World and the Dutch (AWAD), a partnership between Erfgoed Nederland, KITLV and Nationaal Archief, in cooperation with KIT, will organize an Atlantic Day on marronage and maroon communities in the Atlantic. This expert meeting will be hosted at Tropenmuseum, Linnaeusstraat 2, in Amsterdam.

Maroons were slaves who escaped from the Dutch and other European slave systems across the Americas. Many built autonomous lives for themselves, separate from colonial society. Some formed vibrant communities. To what extent is this a shared history and does this have implications for the present?

A panel of renowned experts including Prof. Alex van Stipriaan Luïscius (KIT & Erasmus University Rotterdam), Dr Linda Rupert (University of North Carolina Greensboro and Scaliger Institute, Leiden University), Dr Rômulo Xavier (University of Pernambuco), Andrea Mosterman MA (Boston University) will present their recent projects and research findings on marronage in a discussion and public debate. Presentations and discussion will be in English. After the meeting there will be drinks and snacks.

Participation is free; however to enter the Tropenmuseum there is an admission fee (€ 7.50 with reduction; € 5,00 with Student card and Euro >Holland pass). Before the meeting, with the entrance ticket, you may visit the current exhibition Art of Survival. Maroon culture from Suriname.

Dutch Port, Spanish Hinterland

Op 18 maart a.s. geeft prof. Linda M. Rupert een lezing in Leiden onder de titel ‘Dutch Port, Spanish Hinterland: How Colonial Networks Challenged Imperial Boundaries in the Early Modern Caribbean’.

During the time that the island of Curaçao was an Atlantic hub of the second Dutch West India Company (1675-1791) island residents forged especially close contact with the nearby northern coast of Spanish America. While such ties enhanced Dutch commercial networks they also went well beyond trade to include a variety of socio-cultural exchanges between denizens across the socio-economic spectrum. Rupert argues that such trans-colonial connections require us to rethink historiographic notions of imperial jurisdiction in the early modern Caribbean.

Linda M. Rupert is Assistant Professor (Caribbean and Atlantic World) at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She was a Fulbright Fellow at KITLV in fall 2009 and is currently a Fellow at the Scaliger Institute.
